Too-Kub-Kaw: the Legendary Piece of furniture

The area in the kitchen is quite necessary as it needs to be a place for any kitchenware. If you’re older than the Y-generation, this thing: the not-too-big cupboard used for keeping dried and leftover food named Too-Kub-Kaw might not be so familiar. It  looks like but does not really like a refrigerator (since it is not cold at all). We are heading directly to tell you about the legendary piece of furniture ‘Too-Kub-Kaw’

The capacity of the kitchen is important; it needs space for every frequently-used cooking stuff such as cooking equipment or the tiny bottles of seasoning. In kitchen, not only we use fresh ingredients, but also do we use the dried ones. The latter is the reason why we need the Too-Kub-Kaw to save them in sections.

Too-Kub-Kaw is the piece of houseware which Thais are familiar with for long. Actually, it could be called the Asian legacy. The furniture has been involved with Asians from generation to generation and has lots of different designs. Some are simple. Some are exquisite. This range of differences can well reflect the fact that almost every single family has Too-Kub-Kaw.

The furniture is designed right under the concept of form-follow-function—indeed! It is made to meet the need; that’s why a Too-Kub-Kaw is often designed simply. The top storey is usually used to keep the not-often-be-used. The doors of Too-Kub-Kaw are mostly airy; they would be battens or wire screens in order to prevent the little bug invading. By the way, the highlight of the container is not the figure of itself but its legs.

Caution: pouring some water at the 4 legs of Too-Kub-Kaw
is beneficial and only-Asian-know.

Too-Kub-Kaw legs are always seen with cups of water. This is the local-intellectual method; plus the wire-screen doors, food is perfectly guarded from the hungry insects. Adding some water for the legs could be the favorite activity in childhood. In contrast, if the new-gen are asked to do this, they will have no idea why they have to. Anyway, the good point of doing this is it can indeed protect the food contained inside as if the water could tell the walking bugs that ‘this food is not yours, go away kid’. Moreover, you must not forget adding some temephos in the water; it does help.

Luckily, the newborn Too-Kub-Kaws need no water. The role of them are less than it had been previously since we nowadays have the more functional container that can keep food in the perfect temperature and postpone the food expiration as well. Of course, it is the refrigerator which no bugs are allowed, and no water is needed.

So, is Too-Kub-Kaw still wanted?

Too-Kub-Kaw might sooner or later turn to be old-fashioned and nostalgic. The daily routines of people have changed day-by-day and the living places have been smaller and smaller, so do family members. People skip cooking and eat out more than they did. Too-Kub-Kaw, however, stills, but the furniture is designed to look pretty more up-to-date.

Time changes, but the kitchen is timeless. The kitchen wares are designed to meet the practical usage, and some pieces are even multifunction. A single counter might not be only for containing, but it can be like a one-stop-service kitchen so that we will no more need other kitchen stuffs. The new cooking invention can get quite well with the new-gen lifestyle and be nifty in the same time.
